A day trip to Imlil from Medina offers a stunning escape into the High Atlas Mountains. Located about 65 km south of Marrakech, the 1.5-hour scenic drive takes you through the spectacular Moulay Brahim Gorges to Imlil (1,740m), the gateway to Mount Toubkal.
You’ll be picked up from your riad in Marrakech. The route south climbs into the High Atlas, transitioning from flat plains to dramatic mountain gorges.
Many private tours and shared excursions make a quick stop at an argan oil cooperative along the route so you can watch local women process the nuts and sample authentic products.
Upon arriving in the "Little Chamonix" of the Atlas Mountains, you will be greeted with a traditional glass of sweet, refreshing mint tea.
Meet your local mountain guide for a 2- to 4-hour gentle trek through the valley. You will walk past terraced fields of walnuts, apples, and cherry trees, passing small hamlets like Aroumd (or Armed).
Continue past small waterfalls and admire unobstructed views of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), the highest peak in North Africa.
Settle into a local guesthouse or a family home for a freshly prepared lunch. You can enjoy a classic chicken or lamb tagine with salads and locally baked bread, usually served on a terrace overlooking the mountain ranges.
After taking in the peaceful atmosphere, walk back down to Imlil where your driver will be waiting for the return journey.
You will be dropped off directly at your riad or hotel just as the evening gets underway in the Medina.
